FAQs

Can I book my own appointment or do I need a referral?

We prefer referrals from family doctors for several reasons - it helps them stay updated on what’s happening, and it also helps us ensure we aren’t missing important information about your health. That said, if you don’t have a family doctor, call our clinic and we will accommodate you.

Are you a doctor or a therapist?

Short answer: both. Long answer: Dr. Hart is a family doctor with a special interest and extra training in sexual health. This includes medical management as well as sex therapy. Which of those options applies to you will depend on the nature of the problem, and we will discuss the plan at your appointment.

Do I need to have bloodwork done before my appointment?

Generally…no. There are specific times when bloodwork or other investigations can be helpful, but if this is the case for you, we will order whatever is required at your appointment.

What will happen at my appointment?

The main thing is that we will talk. You’ll be asked for past medical and sexual history, and details about your particular issues. An examination is sometimes required, and we will discuss whether it’s necessary at your appointment. Appointments generally last 60-90 minutes. Sexual dysfunction is complex, so we don’t expect to have all the answers at the first appointment - our goal is to develop a stepwise plan for how we will proceed.

Will you manage my other, non-sexual health conditions?

No. Our mandate is sexual dysfunction only. This may involve medications, therapy, or referrals to other specialists when necessary. However, your general health and management of any unrelated problems will be left in the hands of your family doctor or other specialists, as required.

Do you have any other locations or hours?

Unfortunately there are few doctors who specialize in sexual dysfunction, and our only location is in Okotoks. The sexual function clinic is only open Wednesdays and Thursdays.
